Lee (Chow Chung) is in love with opera actress Chun-heung (Kam Ling). They secretly become engaged, but Lee’s father forces him to marry someone else. Lee decides to go to the capital to take his imperial exams. Meanwhile, the villainous Fong lusts after Chun-heung and when she turns him down, he concocts an evil plan…
Fung Wong Nui takes a break from her villainess roles to play Chun-heung’s kind and elderly mother, where her sincere performance in the two emotional scenes where she meets her daughter in prison and her attempt to save her child are particularly moving. Also worth a special mention is the six-minute traditional opera performance within the film where Fung Wong Nui performs in full costume the classic role of the martial heroine Mu Guiying. Showcasing her vocal and physical techniques, the scene is a real treat for Fung Wong Nui fans and Cantonese opera fanatics alike.
