The film is adapted from a Cantonese opera of the same title written by Sun Ma Si-tsang, in which Fung Wong Nui plays a villainess for the first time, drawing widespread acclaim and thus helping cement her image as one of the foremost interpreters of female villainy. Aside from her excellent performance, it also features three of Sun Ma Si Tsang’s signature songs.
Fung Wong Nui plays a woman having an extramarital affair with Shum (Lau Hark-suen), and their affair is discovered by her young stepson Leung (Yuen Siu-fai). Leung asks his elder brother Nin (Sun Ma Si-tsang) to expose the adulterous pair, who gets blinded and subsequently has to beg for a living… After a series of twists and turns, the story concludes with an immensely moving ending.
This film represents a later, more mature interpretation of the villainess in Fung Wong Nui’s career. Clearly at the height of her artistic powers, she delivers a powerful performance that became one of her most iconic roles.
Please note that the image quality of parts of the film is short of ideal. We appreciate your understanding.
