Only Part One of this two-parter is being screened as part of the programme to highlight Fung Wong Nui’s performance in the first film.
King Ping (Yam Kim-fai)’s two consorts Choi-luen (Yu Lai-zhen) and Kam-fung (Fung Wong Nui) give birth to his children at the same time. After Kam-fung’s baby dies, she switches its corpse with Choi-luen’s baby. When Choi-luen becomes pregnant again, Kam-fung schemes to get rid of her rival…
As second female lead, Fung Wong Nui often played the villainess pitted against Yu Lai-zhen. As evidenced by their earlier collaborations in the series of The Butterfly Spirit, The Crab Beauty and The Headless Empress, they are a perfect pair of nemeses.
In this film, Fung Wong Nui gives a fascinatingly layered performance—jealous, competitive, seductive, ruthless, and determined. She also delivers one of the film’s most memorable lines: ‘Don’t be infatuated with her!’
