The film is adapted from a story from the Qing-dynasty literary classic Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. The fox spirit Ma (Wong Chin-sui) spends the night at the Yeung residence. He discovers the family is often at the mercy of the eldest son’s vicious wife (Fung Wong Nui), who bullies and beats them. Ma uses his powers to help the husband (Leung Sing-por) assert himself, but his wife sees through their ruse and breaks the spell. When the younger Yeung son (Lam Kar-sing) goes out of town, his sister-in-law even ejects his wife (Tse Lo Lin) from the house…

Fung Wong Nui stuns in the character of the shrewish wife, pulling no punches in conveying her cruelty, small-mindedness, and even propensity for physical violence. She also displays excellent rapport with Leung Sing-por, as the two thespians portray a complex power dynamic, taking turns to assert dominance over each other.
