Chun Kim’s My Intimate Partners is a landmark film that introduced a beloved trope in Hong Kong cinema—the unlikely brotherhood between two men with contrasting personalities. This influential story inspired numerous homages in TV series and films over the decades, particularly during the wave of nostalgia in the 1990s.

The film follows a fallen magnate who loses everything (Patrick Tse Yin). Penniless and desperate, he attempts suicide but fails. Turning to robbery, he tries to mug a passer-by (Woo Fung), who turns out to be his former classmate. Reunited by chance, the two destitute men move in together and develop a bond despite their differences—one is straightforward and pessimistic, the other witty and optimistic. Complications arise when both men fall for a kind and charming family tutor (Nam Hung), who moves into the same tenement. In the film’s simple and heartwarming world, the friends do not scheme against each other, their rivalry unfolding instead through moments of comedic charm.

Beyond its humour and romance, My Intimate Partners captures the spirit of Hong Kong’s transitioning society in the 1960s—moving from pessimism to optimism, brimming with resilience and hope.
