In Johnnie To’s hilarious period comedy Justice, My Foot!, Stephen Chow and Anita Mui breathe new life into the classic tale of Sung Sai-kit, a legendary lawyer whose sharp wit and silver tongue are matched only by his wife’s fiery spirit. While this remake of the 1948 classic The Judge Goes to Pieces follows a similar plot, it elevates the story with a fresh dose of slapstick humour and action-packed martial arts, packing it with never a dull moment. Unlike the original, the remake begins with Sung’s decision to retire before introducing the wronged widow who pleads with him to seek justice for her husband’s murder, keeping viewers entertained right from the beginning.
Chow channels the charm of Ma Si-tsang’s original performance, re-enacting iconic scenes such as Sung being unwittingly dressed as a woman or squatting in the courtroom in a nonchalant manner, all the while injecting his own signature comedic flair. Anita Mui, already a cultural icon of Hong Kong then, reinvents Sung’s wife as a martial arts powerhouse, as invincible with her fists as with her words. Under Johnnie To’s masterful direction, the remake rivals the brilliance of its 1948 predecessor, and smashed Hong Kong box office records, grossing HK$50 million. It set the benchmark for future period courtroom comedies.
