Director Jeff Lau delivers an uproarious film filled with parodies and eccentric characters in 92 The Legendary la Rose Noire, which reimagines the beloved vigilante myth of Black Rose (1965) as a chaotic and bizarre adventure. The story follows down-on-her-luck writer Butterfly (Maggie Shiu), who, along with her best friend (Teresa Mo), witnesses a deadly shootout among drug dealers. Inspired by the Black Rose movie she watched the night before, Butterfly leaves a note falsely claiming responsibility as the legendary vigilante. Her impulsive act catches the attention of Black Rose’s former apprentices (Fung Bo-bo and Wong Wan-sze), who kidnap her and whisk her away to their trap-filled Rose Mansion. Detective Lui (Tony Leung Ka-fai), hopelessly infatuated with Butterfly, sets out on a rescue mission, only to find himself imprisoned in the mansion.
Featuring retro aesthetics and playful nods to 1960s Hong Kong cinema—including cameos from classic-era stars like Sima Wah-lung, who played the bumbling detective in the original Black Rose—92 The Legendary la Rose Noire is both a deliriously entertaining comedy and a tribute to the 1960s. Released during a nostalgic wave that swept through Hong Kong’s cultural productions in the 1990s, the film also revived the song ‘Ex-Love is Like a Dream’. A newly recorded cover of the song became a Cantopop hit in 1992, adding to the film’s nostalgic charm.
