Inspired by the sensation surrounding the Qin dynasty terracotta warriors exhibition in Hong Kong in the 1980s, art director-turned-filmmaker Tony Au teamed up with acclaimed screenwriter Chiu Kang-chien—with Manfred Wong joining later—to create this extraordinary and whimsical romance about lovers reincarnated.

World-renowned actor Chow Yun-fat stars as Sung, a philharmonic conductor returning to Hong Kong from the US, ready to settle down with his fiancée, played by former Miss Hong Kong winner Cher Yeung. But his world is shaken when he begins to experience visions of a mysterious woman dancing in ancient costume. Meanwhile, a jewellery designer, played by the equally iconic Brigitte Lin, is haunted by dreams of a Qin-dynasty soldier who looks exactly like Sung. Their paths cross at the terracotta exhibition, and together they uncover a tragic love story buried for over two millennia. Torn apart by death in the Qin dynasty, fate reunites them in the present, where Sung must choose between a love that has waited since antiquity and the life he has built.

With Tony Au’s refined aesthetic vision, William Chang’s Golden Horse-winning costume design, Bill Wong’s painterly cinematography, and Law Wing-fai’s Hong Kong Film Award-winning score, Dream Lovers is a hauntingly beautiful film that stood apart from the action- and comedy-driven Hong Kong cinema of the 1980s.
