Adapted from Liang Yusheng’s novel of the same name, The Jade Bow is an intoxicating mix of wuxia rivalries, imperial conspiracies, and a tangled love triangle. Beyond its captivating action scenes, the film’s literary sensibilities introduce an element of novelty to the martial arts genre. The heroine Li Shengnan (Chen Sisi) is determined to avenge the brutal murder of her parents, while also trying desperately to win back the heart of her beloved Jin Shiyi (Fu Che). Upon learning that Jin’s love, Gu Zhihua (Wang Baozhen), is the daughter of her enemy, the romantic entanglements between the trio become even more complex and fraught. Chen delivers a standout performance, alternating between commanding strength, tenderness, and wit before her beloved. On the other hand, opposite the innocent Gu, she reveals and lays bare her inner conflict and anguish. Li Shengnan is without doubt one of Chen’s most representative and memorable roles.
