From television to feature films, Allen Fong was always exploring ways to tell a “real” story. His down-to-earth, documentary-like style provided an interesting contrast to other genre-leaning Hong Kong New Wave works. After the autobiographical Father and Son, Fong takes a further step into neo-realist cinema with this real story about a real character. Just as she does in real life, the Ah Ying (Hui So-ying) in the film works in a fish stall, live in a cramped flat with her family, has rendezvous with her ex-boyfriend and takes film classes at the Film Culture Center. Through scenes of Ah Ying taking acting lessons, Fong intentionally blurs the line between reality and the “reality” we see on screen. Fong’s critically acclaimed neo-realist drama-a rare genre in Hong Kong cinema-was the winner of Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards and is still considered one of the greatest Hong Kong films ever made.
