Thanks to the box office success of Les Belles (1961) in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, director Doe Ching reteamed with Lin Dai and Peter Chen Ho for this extravagant contemporary romantic comedy. Like their previous collaboration, Lin and Chen once again play a feuding odd couple. Putting on the persona of a career professional with thick-rimmed glasses and a fancy suit, Lin plays an old-fashioned gynaecologist, while Chen plays a fashion designer who has pride in his talent. The pair go through a series of misunderstandings before finally putting their feud aside and fall in love. Shaw Brothers spared no expense for the production, a unique hybrid of a musical and fashion film. Every fashion show is elaborately designed with colourful backdrops and moving songs tailor-made to fit the different themes. With richly textured and vivid imagery, the film is truly a feast for the senses. Lin even serves as costume designer, designing her character’s costumes and styles. Winner of the Best Comedy prize at the 10th Asian Film Festival.
