Following The Battle of Love (1957), Lin Dai once again plays a young lady who yearns for her true love. Ding Xiaoyuan (Lin Dai) leaves her hometown to stay with her long-time crush, cousin Zhang Zhengguang (Chang Yang), determined to win his affection. This time, she is not playing an innocent love game anymore. She tactfully sets a love trap, gradually eliminating her romantic rivals around her charming cousin. In the end, through a swimsuit show, the cousin becomes aware of the fact that his once naïve and playful little cousin has grown into a stunning beauty. In the film, Lin’s image as a fashionable urban girl is lively and fresh. She successfully portrays the duality of the character, being innocent and funny on the outside but cautiously scheming on the inside. She makes three clay figures that symbolises her love rivals and schemes to kick them away from her cousin one by one. This witchcraft-resembling gesture seems a bit weird, but Lin’s honest and contented look convinces audience that these are all for love’s sake.
