Thrice being ascended to the throne of Best Actress in the Asian Film Festival, Lin Dai thrived with yet another classic production that became an instant success upon release. This time she pairs with the acclaimed actor Kwan Shan, who just won Best Actor at the Locarno Film Festival, acting out a classic romantic tragedy. The story follows a young lady, Li Qingqing, who moves from the countryside to the city to visit relatives. She encounters the handsome young man Tang Pengnan in a night club, and they fall in love. When everything seems to go well and they hope to be together forever, fate intervenes. Qingqing is diagnosed with an incurable disease, forcing the couple to confront the pain of illness and separation. Qingqing transitions from a naïve girl to a popular singing star, enduring misunderstandings and grievances from her lover. When she learns that her time is short, she hesitates to express her feelings, fearing to cause her lover pain, which led to a truly heart-wrenching ending. From shyness and innocence to a desolate state of mind, Lin Dai subtly portrays her shifts of emotions in this film. Lin won her fourth Best Actress award at the 9th Asian Film Festival, where Wang Fuling received a special prize for Best Theme Song.
