Restored Treasures – Last Romance (1988) (4K Digitally Restored Version) World Premiere 

Last Romance (1988), starring Cherie Chung and Maggie Cheung, is written and directed by Yonfan, who is known for his romantic style. The story is adapted from the renowned Hong Kong writer Yi Shu’s novel of the same name.

The 4K restoration, self-funded by Far-Sun Film Co Ltd, highlights Yonfan’s meticulous pursuit of aesthetics and also consolidates the film as a significant work that shines a light on Hong Kong’s popular culture during the 1980s.

Thanks to the trust and support from Far-Sun, the Hong Kong Film Archive has been authorised to present the world premiere of their 4K digitally restored version of Last Romance on 8 September 2024 at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC). This gives audiences another chance to appreciate the timeless performances of the two leading actresses and dazzling scenes of Hong Kong in the 1980s on the silver screen.

In addition to the screening, Far-Sun has generously provided rarely seen stills and behind-the-scenes photos of Last Romance for exhibition at the HKCC and the Hong Kong Film Archive. The exhibition will be on display on the day of the world premiere (8 September), at the 2/F foyer of the HKCC, near the entrance to the Grand Theatre. Admission is free for ticket holders. Subsequently, from 11 September to 30 December, the exhibition will be relocated to the Archive. Entry will also be free.

The screening is also a celebratory programme of the 35th anniversary of the HKCC.
