After So-so (Cherie Chung) transfers to Nancy’s (Maggie Cheung) school, the two form an inseparable bond despite their contrasting personalities. Their romantic escapade with the dashing Ga-ming (Shingo Tsurumi) at Hong Kong’s famed Ocean Park, among other adventures, marks a time of innocent joy before life takes them in separate directions. Five years later, they cross paths with Ga-ming again. Nancy is now a fashion designer, while So-so has become a glamorous socialite on the brink of marrying into wealth. Their reunion reignites old feelings for Ga-ming, complicating their friendship, but ultimately they navigate these complications to remain pillars of support for each other during hard times.

Adapted from Yi Shu’s beloved novel, Yonfan’s film lyrically traces Nancy and So-so’s journeys from naive schoolgirls to sophisticated women. Set against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s transformative 1980s, Last Romance draws poignant parallels between the protagonists’ personal growth and the city’s political and economic upheavals. The film exudes a profound sense of nostalgia, stirring deep emotions in the audience through its touching and evocative portrayal of youthful days and a bygone era.
