The Rouge Tigress offers one of the strongest–and one of the best–woman characters in Cantonese cinema. Hung Sin Nui, in this Kong Ngee Company debut, plays a young songstress consumed with a desire to avenge her mother. In an update of the legendary beauty Diao Chan’s exploits, she methodically seduces the heartless Han and his son, turning them against each other and run away with her lover, played by the up-and-coming Patrick Tse Yin. The versatile Hung Sin Nui turns in a magnificently complex performance, embodying both the beauty and the verve suggested by the title.
