Mutual Understanding, the third production of Sun Luen, continues the company’s policy of depicting the lives of ordinary people and the profound problems they face. The film is at once a tenement film and a family melodrama, it tells the story of the conflict between a young wife and her mother-in-law set in an apartment shared by two families. The film is a joint effort from Cheung Ying, Wong Man-lei and Hung Sin Nui, three of the best Hong Kong actors of all time. Director Chun Kim skillfully captures the three’s relationship and examines the social issues involved, and the result is a timeless classic about an age-old conflict.
