Girl in Red features a nuanced performance by Hung Sin Nui, and is a marker of Cantonese cinema’s rising sophistication in the early 1950s. Hung plays the charming yet puffed up taxi dancer who is neither villain nor victim, not the wicked seductress who wrecks the families of men under her spell nor the innocent damsel forced into the profession by harsh social conditions. Instead, she’s a woman of simple vanity, spoiled by flattery and intoxicated by the lifestyle of her trade, and her ups and downs is Lee Tit’s parable about money and greed.
