Les Belles represents major effort by Shaws to establish itself as a studio of weight, lavishing a generous budget on its first widescreen colour production. And Lin Dai is the star for the mission. The backstage comedy takes after the sumptuous approach of Hollywood revue musicals, punctuating the romantic plot with elaborately staged songand-dance set pieces. Lin spent eight months learning the dance steps and the performance won her a third Best Actress Award at the 8th Asian Film Festival.
