The Kingdom and the Beauty was a huge hit, elevating Lin Dai from a star to superstar and consolidating her reputation as an icon of historical films. Though the character is in fact a costume version of the many farmer's daughters Lin had played in her early career, such as those in Singing under the Moon and The Fisherman's Daughter, she interprets it with such charm and emotional fervour that it has become one of her defining roles.
