Lin Dai's many portrayals of historical beauties are cherished by her fansand the title role of Diau Charn is her first. The film is itself an important part of history, as the first huangmei film produced by Shaws. Director LiHan-hsiang convinced the studio to make the film, the huge popularity of which made him a major director and ushered in the huangmei era in Hong Kong film history. Lin's performing talents are in full display as she lipsynchs the songs, dances to the melodies and acts out the complex emotions her character goes through.
