A Mellow Spring
Dir: Li Han-hsiang
Scr: Cheng Kang
Cast: Lin Dai, Chao Lei, Lo Wei
1957 | B&W | D Beta | Cantonese (dubbed) | 86min
A Mellow Spring is the Mandarin cinema's entry into the tenement genre popular in the post-war years, especially on the Cantonese side, in which a cross-section of citizens endure poverty and severe social conditions together in crammed living conditions. With Li Han-hsiang at the helm, the film also takes on the flavour of a northern courtyard. Lin Dai's role as an unemployed worker is not a star turn and she dutifully serves as a team player, complementing the other actors with an understated but by-no-means mundane performance.
