The Fisherman's Daughter

The Fisherman's Daughter

Dir/Scr: Bu Wancang
Cast: Lin Dai, Yan Jun, Wang Lai
1956 | B&W | D Beta | Mandarin | 91min

Lin Dai's first film Singing under the Moon (1953) was a great succes. Her debut made her a star and the village lass she played in it has come to define the actress in her early films. Although Singing under the Moon is now unavailable, we can get a good idea of what it's like from The Fisherman's Daughter, released less than two years later and pairing Lin again with the earlier film's Yan Jun. The film again essays the conflict between city and country in the romance that develops between the leads and Lin shines with an exuberance that personifies the appeal of rural values.
