The Country Doctor

The Country Doctor

Director: D.W. Griffith
Production Company: Biograph
1909 | US | B&W | 15min | 35mm | Silent with English Intertitles

Six years before Birth of a Nation, D. W. Griffith was already hitting his stride. The Country Doctor is an exemplary work. Griffith packs compelling narrative power in this one reeler, the story of a doctor who's torn between caring for his own daughter or someone else's. He had obviously mastered cross-cutting, using the technique to animate his carefully composed images, creating great suspense and, ultimately, gripping drama.
