Tai Ping Theatre, located in Shek Tong Tsui, was one of the biggest cinemas in Hong Kong. Over 3,000 film-related items were donated by Ms. Beryl Yuen, the theatre's third-generation owner, to the Hong Kong Film Archive and they are now considered some of the most important pre-war artefacts in the Archive's collection. Celebrating the Archive's 20th Anniversary, a number of them will be presented for the very first time in an exhibition, taking us back to the glory days of movie palaces.

Years ago, the Hong Kong Film Archive acquired from the US a stash of long-lost Hong Kong films from the 1930s and 40s as well as batches of archival documents sent for US censorship, which comprised of over several hundreds of Hong Kong titles. Based on the precious clues offered up by these items, the Archive convened an online symposium with local and overseas researchers and scholars in early January 2021, to discuss a broad range of issues concerning the budding stage of Hong Kong film, the origins and evolution of Hong Kong cinema as well as early Hong Kong films and their impact on the development of the film industry. Papers presented by speakers will be further compiled into an edited volume by the Archive. Stay tuned for more details.
