He may still be working under the name Chu Yuen-lung in The Valiant Ones, but the Sammo Hung the world would later come to know is already moving out of the stuntman shade to cast his wide shadow on the landscape of Hong Kong films and martial arts cinema. His action choreography matches King Hu's brilliant decoupage step by dynamic step, demonstrating clearly his mastery of martial arts direction. He even plays a key role, rising above costuming limitations and knee-jerk stereotyping to bring his Japanese villain to life. This print of The Valiant Ones is also an early restoration project of the Hong Kong Film Archive, parts of which repaired digitally.
